The Toronto Maple Leafs underestimated Ridley Greig putting the nail in the coffin in the final round of the Battle of Ontario on Saturday.

The Ottawa Senators clinched that 5-3 victory with an empty-net shot at Canadian Tire that sent Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly over the edge.

A spitting Rielly head-checked Greig because the Leafs didn't appreciate his actions and he could face disciplinary action from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

“It was a stupid thing to do by their guy at the end,” said Leafs goaltender Martin Jones, who was watching from the bench.

Of course, the senators weren't against it, but they didn't like Rielly going after Greig.

“The league will look into it. It's not a hockey game,” interim coach Jacques Martin said. “It's just frustration or something. It's not part of the game.”

Martin added: “He put the puck in the net. Whether he shoots or pushes, (what Riley did) shouldn't happen.”

However, the Leafs were disappointed and it left them fuming. Greig needed medical attention before leaving the ice.

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe told TSN's Claire Hanna that he thought Rielly's response was correct.

“I thought it was appropriate,” Keefe said, adding. “Our players have a right to answer.”

The Senators understand the Leafs' frustration, but didn't like Rielly's actions.

“You never know what Greig's going to do,” center Josh Norris said. “I loved it, but if I was on the other side, I wouldn't have liked it either. I didn't like their revenge and I understand their frustration. But it's all over and I think it was fun.”

Center Shane Pinto thought it was entertainment.

“(Greig's) performance was pretty funny to say the least. It ended up being fun,” Pinto said with a laugh. “It was a very difficult game. They felt they had to do it and I hope (Greig) does well.”
