Calvert Four Books Place in Viterra Final – Winnipeg Free Press

STONEWALL – Brayden Calvert is headed to his first Manitoba men's curling final.

The Carberry product led his Winnipeg team to an 8-7 victory over top-seeded Viterra Championship Reid Carruthers in a 1-on-2 playoff game Saturday night.

“We feel really good, we're confident about the finals because of how well we played,” he said.

Calvert led off with a double with his last stone for the decisive point.

The final is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Calvert's third team out of Fort Rouge now awaits the winner of a 9 a.m. semifinal that pits Carruthers against Assiniboine Memorial's Jordan McDonald.

McDonald defeated Gladstone's Jeff Stewart 4-3 in a 3-on-4 game Saturday night.

The Manitoba title holders advance to the Brier National Championships in Regina next month. Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone qualified based on his high status in the Canadian Team Ranking System.

Calvert, with third Corey Chambers, second Kyle Kurtz and lead Brendan Bilawka, led 6-2 after five ends and 7-4 after seven before falling late.

Former Olympic champion Brad Jacobs missed and Carruthers from Granite trailed with a pair heading home, but three yellows were hidden behind the corner guard, forcing Calvert into a pressure-filled final draw.
