Alberta MLA Sarah Hoffman is entering the NDP leadership race

Former Alberta Deputy Premier Sarah Hoffman officially entered the NDP leadership race on Sunday.

The Edmonton-Glenora MLA announced her leadership bid at the Woodcroft Community League in Edmonton.

He is the third politician to announce his intention to run, joining former Alberta justice minister Kathleen Ganley and Edmonton MP Rakhi Pancholi.

Hoffman was introduced by Kathryn Swampy and Nathan Yip, and then announced that he was a “proud New Democrat” during his Super Bowl Sunday announcement.

“I know it's Super Bowl Sunday. Can you tell what I wore to the Super Bowl? he said that it is necessary to gather both in front and behind the stage.

Alberta's former health minister has fallen foul of the United Conservative Party after she said she wore “Taylor Swift red lipstick” to a sporting event.

“As New Democrats, our values are critical to solving the problems of today,” Hoffman said.

“We need to fix public health after five years of UCP sabotage. We must get every Albertan a safe and affordable home after five years of UCP brutality. We must act urgently on the climate crisis that threatens our way of life.”

Hoffman then talked about his father and mother, a school principal and a kindergarten teacher in the rural community of Kinuso. He wanted to be a teacher, but his father told him that the province never respected or cared for teachers. He decided to enroll anyway.

Elaborating on her venture into the NDP, she spoke about the time she ran for the school board amid numerous school closures in her neighborhood, saying she never thought about public office.

“Women like me, we shouldn't go into politics,” she said.

“I'm fat, I'm shy, and I have a hard time pretending to be someone I'm not.”

He won 70 percent of the vote, the first of five electoral victories.

Hoffman said his campaign priorities are human rights, health, climate protection and commitment to the NDP.

“I want to run a campaign that's clean, forward-thinking, looking at ideas and positive that we're building,” he told reporters after the announcement. “An amazing group that invites us all to read books in 2027. I can feel it in this room—I'm sure the people in these rooms want me to do it, too.”

Watch: Rachel Notley steps down as leader

The New Democrat, who says he's not a Liberal and “people in Alberta know that too,” grew up in rural Alberta with “a few hundred people and the values of the NDP were the values of our community.”

“When we needed help to go to the hospital, there was a phone tree and someone would take someone to the hospital. When you need to remove your farm, field farmers help each other.

“I think it's important to talk about our values and our coming to rural Alberta. It is not right to have a UCP MLA in my hometown, so we will be there, we will work hard and we will change it.”

Ganley was the first to announce his candidacy for the post on Monday, followed by Pancholi on Thursday.

Incumbent NDP Leader Rachel Notley stepped down on Jan. 16 but will remain on the front bench during the spring session.

The race to replace Notley ends on June 22.
