The Warriors extended their winning streak to five with this morning's win in Calgary

A three-goal third period saw the Warriors beat the Hitmen 5-2 to solidify second place in the Eastern Conference.

Despite facing a quick turnaround on the road, the Moose Jaw Warriors didn't miss a beat Saturday afternoon in Western Hockey League action in Calgary.

When both teams hit the ice at the Saddledome 18 hours after playing the night before, the Warriors controlled most of the game and defeated the Hitmen 5-2.

Moose Jaw improved to 33-16-0-2 with the win and now moves four points ahead of Medicine Hat for second place in the Eastern Conference pending the outcome of Saturday's game between the Tigers and Red Deer.

The win also extended the Warriors' current winning streak to five games, adding to their streak of 16 in their last 18 games.

Despite those positives, the Warriors received some bad news before the matchup, as first-round pick Matthew Savoie from the Buffalo Sabers was injured during warmups and was unable to take the ice Saturday afternoon. There is no information on the nature and severity of the injuries.

That didn't stop Moose Jaw from getting off to a great start, as early pressure led to Braden Schurman's opener with 2:24 left in the game. Schurman's shot from the right circle was stopped by Calgary goaltender Ethan Buenaventura, but the puck went up in the air and into the net for his 15th of the campaign.

Calgary tied the game five minutes later when Brandon Gorzynski hit a point shot that took a piece off Warriors netminder Evan May and slid into the corner of the net.

Much like their game at Red Deer a few hours earlier, the Warriors would come out on top in the first period thanks to a late goal.

Defenseman Cosmo Wilson got the reward this time, as his layup from the point dribbled through traffic and put Buenaventura up two seconds into the game.

That goal set the tone for the second period and the Warriors had steady and consistent pressure throughout the frame.

It eventually led to the Warriors' third goal at 6:03 as Rylen Kovacevic was rewarded for going hard on the net when he deflected home Atlee Calvert's shot.

The offensive opportunities never ceased as the period wore on, leading to several more Moose Jaw goals before the frame ended.

Calem Parker scored with 1:55 to play in the frame, and Brayden Yager capped a shift full of ridiculous opportunities by tapping home a one-timer from the slot with 14 seconds left.

Jagger Firkus had his second assist of the game, extending his scoring streak to 24 games and setting a modern-day Warriors record. The streak is also the longest streak in the WHL. Firkus continues to lead the World Championship with 91 points in 46 games.

The Warriors put things on cruise control in the third period, and Calgary would have more chances as the flow of play was even, but would get one marker.

Maksim Muranov scored 53 seconds into the game, but that was the end of the night's scoring.

Schuurman finished with a perfect game overall, scoring one goal and two points, adding two assists and winning 13 of his 18 faceoffs on the night.

May had to be strong in the third period and he stopped 16 shots and faced a total of 37 shots. The Warriors had 26 hits on Bueventura in two periods and eight on Alex Garrett in the third.

Moose Jaw returns to action Thursday night when the Brandon Wheat Kings are in town. Game time is 7pm at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
