Officers opened fire during standoff, 2 men in custody

A standoff with guns and barricades in the North End turned violent after three Winnipeg police officers were shot.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 200 block of College Avenue after receiving a report of a woman being held against her will.

Upon arrival, officers quickly learned that several people were inside the room, as well as a firearm.

A tactical support team was called in and several people were extricated, including the woman who had been detained. However, the remaining residents, who are still believed to be armed, refused to leave.

More than a dozen police cars were at the scene for several hours as officers worked to remove the suspects from the apartment building.

At one point, one of the suspects opened fire on the police, hitting three officers.

The injuries sustained by the officers were not life-threatening.

Eventually, the police managed to arrest two 40-year-old men. They remained in custody.

Crime Stoppers and Homicide officers are continuing to investigate.
