How winter sports enthusiasts feel about the mild weather

Mild temperatures continued over the weekend in Montreal, putting some winter sports on hold.

Some residents, such as Gaetan Kolpki, even decided to take off their shorts when the city warmed up to 8 degrees.

Unseasonably warm weather hasn't deterred skiers at Mount Royal. Most trails are open, including the main trail.

“I mean, it's good, but this year it's a little weird and it's a little harder to ski,” Maya Nussbaun said.

Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said warm weather from the west is moving east.

“It brought all the southern air to Ontario and Quebec,” he said. .

Mont Castor in Matane, Que. covered its slopes all day. The mountain does not have snow cannons, but other hills rely on them to stay afloat.

“Most of the base right now is artificial snow. I mean, we had maybe one snowstorm a month ago,” said Shane Booth, general manager of Mont-Habitant.

Yves Muchaka, manager of Play it again sports, said sales of winter equipment have been slow this season and the mild winter is hurting his business. He said he hasn't sold a single snowshoe and sales are down 35 to 40 percent.

“The store has been open for 28 years. “It was the slowest winter,” he said.

Muchaka and other winter enthusiasts are still waiting for more snow.

“I love old winter. You were sure it was just going to be cold,” said NDG resident Marte Verron.

Environment Canada says temperatures should drop again by midweek.
