Jets Hang On, beat Pittsburgh and lose

AGAIN:

The Winnipeg Jets got back in the win column with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.

The Jets, who scored both goals in the opening period, jumped out to an early lead and held off the veteran Penguins offense while relying on the strong netminding of Connor Hellebuyck, whose 35-save performance gave him 24 wins on the year and earned first-team All-Star honors. .

The Jets got goals from Mark Scheifele and Nino Niederreiter, both of whom haven't found the scoreboard in quite some time.

Scheifele's goal came off a beautiful pass from Nikolai Ehlers, who shot the puck three-on-one to Scheifele. He hit a one-timer past Tristan Jarry to give the Jets a 1-0 lead.

Niederreiter made it 2-0 as he deflected in a shot from Nate Schmidt for his first goal in 16 games.

Pittsburgh pulled one back in the middle frame when Brian Rast redirected Erik Karlsson's point shot, but that was all the Penguins could muster in the evening, as Hellebuyck and the Jets fell 2-1.

The win was Winnipeg's first in six games. On Wednesday night, the Jets return home against the San Jose Sharks, who are ranked 31st in the league.

Nino Niederreiter on the goalkeeping battle between Connor Hellebuyck and Tristan Jarry:

“They're two great goaltenders and Bucky is obviously at the top of it. He helped us get a big win in the second period. They made a big push and we just let them play, but we got the third game back.”

Nikolai Ehlers in a play by Connor Hellebuyck:

“I've said it a million times now. We've got two very good goalkeepers and they're top class. We're very lucky to have that.”
