Winnipeg school name change request

WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg school's parent council is asking for a name change.

Wolseley School and the surrounding area are named after Colonel Garnet Wolseley.

His role in the Red River Rebellion of 1870 was criticized by local people.

A biography on the school's website says Garnet Wolseley commanded the force sent to quell the rebellion led by Louis Riel.

The chairman of the Winnipeg school division's board of trustees says the request will go to public consultation.
