VCU shuts down #18 Dayton for 49-47 win – Winnipeg Free Press

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Jason Nelson scored 11 points and VCU never trailed after the opening minutes in a 49-47 victory over No. 18 Dayton on Friday night.

The Rams (16-8, 8-3 Atlantic 10) won for the eighth time in their last nine games despite going scoreless in the final six minutes. They held Dayton scoreless for the final 3:03.

The Flyers (19-4, 9-2) fell to 0-2 in Virginia with a 69-64 loss at Richmond on Jan. 27.

DaRon Holmes II had a clean look at a potential jumper for Dayton, but missed in the final seconds. Nate Santos led the Flyers with 19 points and Holmes had 12.

NEVADA 70, NO. 24 SAN DIEGO STATE 66

RENO, Nev. (AP) – Kenan Blackshear scored eight of his 22 points in overtime and Nevada beat San Diego State.

Tre Coleman made two key steals and a tiebreaking basket in the extra period as the Wolf Pack defeated an AP Top 25 team for the first time in back-to-back games. Nevada (19-5, 6-4 Mountain West) is coming off a 77-63 win at No. 22 Utah State on Tuesday.

Coleman's short jumper put Nevada up 68-66 with 12 seconds left. Blackshear made two free throws in the final seconds after SDSU's Darrion Trammell missed a 3-point attempt.

Jarod Lucas had 15 points and Nick Davidson added 14 for the Wolf Pack, who led the game until the 3:47 mark of the second half. San Diego State (18-6, 7-4) held a narrow lead in regulation, but Davidson pounced on a loose ball and put it in at the 60 with 5.3 seconds left to tie it.
