Toronto broke a decades-old temperature record during the spring warm-up

Even though it's almost mid-February, it feels like mid-spring in the GTA, as Toronto broke an 86-year-old temperature record.

A guaranteed high of 14C is expected on Friday, 3C higher than the record high of 10.6C set on February 9, 1938.

The record was unofficially broken in the morning, with Environment Canada recording a temperature of 11.4 C at 10 a.m. at Pearson Airport.

“It's going to be a very mild late spring,” says CityNews 680 Meteorologist Jill Taylor. “Generally, sun and clouds in the afternoon.”

The spring-like warmth will continue into Saturday, with overnight lows expected to be around 9 degrees and daytime highs expected to be the same. A chance of rain on Saturday morning.

It will be slightly cooler on Sunday with a high of 4C. The average daily maximum temperature in February is around 0 C, the average minimum is -7 C.

Some snow is possible early next week, but Taylor says the system appears to be moving toward the city.

“It looks like the snow will miss us further south on Monday,” he says. “But you'll have to look at the weekend.”

Toronto has seen little snow this winter. Last year, 123 centimeters of snow fell in January, this year only 27 centimeters were collected. In 2022, over 150 centimeters of snow fell in Toronto in the same month.
