The Canadian designer who dressed Sophie Trudeau has closed her Toronto storefront

The Toronto designer who dressed Sophie Trudeau has closed her only brick-and-mortar store in the city.

Birds of North America (BNA), a label created by BC designer Hayley Gibson, has been creating colorful, one-of-a-kind clothing since 2006 and has been selling them from their Queen West store since about 2018.

Unfortunately, it's the end of the road for the BNA store after the brand announced its imminent closure last month and officially closed for business on January 21st.

The brand gained attention in 2021 when Sophie Grégoire Trudeau wore the label's now-famous green dress on election night.

While there's no physical store, there's good news for fans of the brand or those hoping to emulate Trudeau's style — Birds of North America is still in business, having moved their operations entirely online.

“We're sad to be leaving the neighborhood and will miss such a beautiful space that showcases the Birds collection,” Gibson wrote in an Instagram post, “but we're ready to focus our creative efforts on other things.”

This may not be the end of the road for Gibson's brick-and-mortar retail, as he commented that the business “may be looking for more retail adventures in the future!” adds.

Birds of North America was previously located at 1114 Queen West.
