Quebec Solidaire is trying to sell sovereignty to a new generation

On Friday, Québec solidaire launched a campaign called Nouveau Québec, an initiative aimed at convincing a new generation of Quebecers to embrace independence.

The campaign is led by QS MNA Ruba Ghazal for the riding of Mercier. As a Palestinian Quebecer, he says he understands what it's like to be uprooted and see his language and culture threatened. He wants to convey his love for French and Quebec culture.

A Léger poll earlier in the month found support for Quebec independence at about 35 percent. The Intention to Vote poll showed the Sovereign Party Quebec at 32 percent, the ruling Coalition Avenir Quebec at 25 percent, QS third at 16 percent and the Quebec Liberals at 15 percent.

Québec solidaire argues that the path to Quebec independence will be built by convincing young people who did not experience the referendums of 1980 and 1995 to support independence.

Ghazal says Quebec cannot afford to lose a third referendum, which will require convincing a new generation.

QS's Émilese Lessard-Therrien is also campaigning for Nouveau Quebec. In his view, the sovereign option is liberating and resonates with a generation that grew up in Quebec without a larger social vision. For Lessard-Therrien, Quebec independence is a cornerstone of action in all areas, including social justice, the environment and self-determination.

QS plans to promote its independence stance on a new website, as well as locally at public events and conferences.
