“There is one special person we would like to pay tribute to now. A player whose unique commitment to helping others is a reflection of his history and transcends it.”

Hayward accepted the gift from the prince and admitted he was shocked to receive the gift from a member of the royal family. He said: “Man, Prince Harry is amazing. Man, I'm in shock. This is Prince Harry.”

Harry flew to London from the US for a brief meeting with King Charles, 75, on Tuesday, a day after it was revealed the monarch was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.

The Duke's meeting with Charles, who was treated for an enlarged prostate in January, took place at the royal residence of Clarence House in London and lasted less than an hour.

It turns out this is their first face-to-face meeting in 16 months. Harry's wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, 42, has stayed at home in California to care for four-year-old Prince Archie and two-year-old Princess Lilybeth.

Harry was spotted boarding a plane at London's Heathrow Airport on Wednesday to fly back to California.

The prince planned a quick trip to Britain after Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer.

A palace statement said: “A separate issue of concern was raised during the King's recent hospital procedure for an enlarged prostate. Subsequent diagnostic tests revealed the type of cancer.

“His Majesty began a regular treatment schedule today, during which doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties. “During this period, Her Majesty will continue to conduct state affairs and official documents as usual.”
