Pembroke management open in Montreal: Whittington upset Lovejoy, Bailarjan safely

Finnlay Whittington caused the biggest upset on day two of the Pembroke Management Open de Montreal, knocking out fifth-seeded Spencer Lovejoy in straight games, while home favorite David Baillargeon came through unscathed.

The 19-year-old Whittington is 23 places below his American rival but has shrugged off that ranking to set up an all-English quarter-final showdown with No. 2 Nathan Lake, needing less than half an hour to complete the 11th. -4, 11-8, 11-7 win.

Lovejoy was one of two top eight seeds denied a place in the last eight, with Montreal native Baillargeon avoiding the same fate and producing a dominant display to see off Australia's Joseph White.

White went through five 75-minute bouts with Mohamed Nabil in the first round (while Baillargeon was in his corner) and it was a torturous job as he tried to fight the Canadian from head to toe.

In the end, Baillargeon needed just 24 minutes to complete his victory, controlling the T in the match and dropping just nine points, and will now face another erratic player, Sanjay Jeeva, to advance.

Malaysia's Jeeva defeated Argentina's Jeremias Azanya in four games, eventually needing a tiebreak to win the fourth game, capping off the most exciting match of the night, which featured athleticism, tenacity and controversy.

In contrast, Azanya's Kinetic Indoor Racket Club teammate Tom Walsh had a successful evening of work with a 3-0 win over Canada's Liam Marrison.

The English No. 4 joins compatriot Lake in straight wins and will now play France's Toufic Mehalfi, who also won three straight and beat New Zealand's Anthony Lepper.

Top seed Greg Lobban also made it through to the quarter-finals without too much trouble, beating the Japanese 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 before clashing with Wales' Emir Evans, who beat the USA 3-1. Dillon Huang.
