The Montreal Alouettes have agreed to sign Canadian Derek Wiggan, according to sources. This is expected to be a 1-year deal. Also, the Alouettes announced Thursday that All-American defensive lineman Almondo Sewell has been released.

Derek Wiggan was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the 4th round (34th overall) of the 2014 CFL draft. Since then, he has played in 117 games in 7 seasons with Calgary. He collected 149 tackles, 17 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception.

The deal won't be signed until Feb. 13 or after free agency opens, but teams are allowed to negotiate with players now.

The Montreal Alouettes also announced the release of 6-time CFL All-Star Almondo Sewell. He first entered the league in 2011 with the Edmonton Eskimos. He played in 185 games in the CFL, recording 334 tackles and 69 sacks. He played most of his CFL career with Edmonton from 2012 to 2020 after a brief stint in the Arena Football League.

Sewell played for the Alouettes from 2021 to 2023. He played in 46 games during the regular season for Montreal, during which time he had 52 tackles and 9 sacks. He has 1 year left on his contract and previously makes $145,000. In 3 seasons with Montreal, he started every game he played on defense.

Sewell started all 3 of the Alouettes' Gray Cup playoff games. In the playoffs, he contributed 3 games, 2 of which ended with a run. He also helped stop the run and had 3 QB hurries.

Montreal's defensive line has made significant moves recently. Last week, their 2023 first-round pick Lwal Uguak signed with the Atlanta Falcons. Montreal also agreed to sign Canadian defenseman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund earlier this week.
