Calgary Weather: A mild weekend with sunshine on Saturday and a chance of snow on Sunday

Friday started with a balance of positives and negatives due to the weather.

Visibility in southern Alberta on Friday was much better than it was on Wednesday and Thursday, but highway conditions worsened significantly due to midweek freezing rain.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, the 511 Alberta map showed icy and snow-covered routes across much of central and southern Alberta.

511 Alberta cameras reinforced reports that at 9:30 a.m. Friday, conditions on major highways were slightly better than secondary roads, with most shoulders and medians covered in snow.

Light winds will remain in Calgary and southern Alberta Friday morning, gradually clearing by evening. Clear skies overnight will lead to cooler overnight temperatures and an occasional wind chill of -19 on Saturday.

With the weekend warmer than most of last week, with highs just above freezing and average lows in the minus single digits, a classic freeze-thaw cycle is likely across the region.

A westerly flow on Saturday will push daytime temperatures above freezing and above seasonal levels in Calgary, contributing to some thaws.

It's expected to be short-lived as cloud cover and more snow is possible in the area Sunday evening and into Monday.
