Calgary gas prices are expected to rise over the weekend

If there is empty space in the tank, it might be a good idea to fill it up.

Gas price spikes are expected to continue over the weekend.

Gas Buddy pegs the average price in Calgary at $1.36/L, while Gas Wizard predicts a $1.45/L increase this afternoon.

It's not unusual for gas prices to go up and down, but Albertans aren't happy with the situation, especially as costs have increased following the partial reintroduction of the provincial gas tax.

The UCP, which was initially delayed until 2022 as an affordability measure, brought the tax back to the pumps on January 1, but from just under 13 cents per liter paid before the delay to nine cents per litre.

The tax rate is based on oil prices — if West Texas Intermediate averages $80 a barrel, the tax will be reduced or eliminated entirely.

Prices have fluctuated over the past five years — the most expensive in Calgary was in June 2022, when it hit $1.90.

The cheapest gas price in recent memory was $0.61/l in April 2020, when the pandemic began.

It could always be worse – the average fill-up price in Victoria right now is $1.66/L, and $1.70/L in Vancouver.

An update on Alberta's fuel tax is expected this spring.
