Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford will announce details of a $3.1 billion infusion to improve health care on Friday, according to reports.

Instead of the new cash, the Ford government will use it to create new primary care teams aimed at improving access to family doctors, the agency said.

The province said it will add hundreds of new family doctors and nurse practitioners, as well as thousands of new nurse practitioners and personal assistants.

Enrollment in health education programs will increase by 700 specifically allocated to Northern Ontario.

Some of the money will go toward increasing mental health services and substance abuse services for youth in rural, remote and indigenous communities, the report said, and the new funding will revamp medical data collection.
