Three things – a slow start will hurt the Jets

The Winnipeg Jets ended their two-game road trip to Pennsylvania with a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia tonight, extending their winless streak to a season-high five games. Kyle Connor scored the Jets' lone goal of the game with 5:12 left to deny Samuel Ersson's second layup against Winnipeg. Laurent Brossoit allowed four goals in a game for the second time this season (Oct. 19 vs. Vegas). The Jets return home to host Pittsburgh on Saturday.

HARD FIRST PHASE

The Jets had not given up three goals in the first period until last February (February 23, 2023, when they allowed four goals against Colorado). It all started for Philadelphia at the 3:37 mark of the opening period when Tyson Foerster hit a Ryan Poehling pass on an odd-man run. The Winnipeg Flyers would kill off back-to-back penalties before getting two more, with Travis Konecny and Morgan Frost scoring with 4:03 left. Philadelphia outshot Winnipeg 13-4 in the first and they trailed 3-0 after 20 minutes.

“Three goals in front of our goal. It's not typical of our group,” said Dylan DeMelo.

“It's something we know we're much better at. You have to give Philly some credit, of course.”

Battle for LB

To the Jets' credit, they didn't disappear after the first period, going 5-on-5 and outscoring the Flyers 25-8 over the final 40 minutes of the game. Their penalty kill also came after giving up four goals, and in the previous two games, briefly, Winnipeg shut down the Flyers' lead four times. Kyle Connor scored a beautiful goal to give his team the lead at 19th of the season and ended the Jets' scoreless drought at 115 minutes.
