The Calgary Stampeders have agreed to terms with American forward Trevon Tate and, barring an unforeseen circumstance, he is expected to join the team on a one-year contract through the 2024 season.

The 27-year-old played in 10 games for the Toronto Argonauts in 2023, eight from left tackle and two from right tackle. He was part of a unit that allowed a league-low 19 sacks and helped their backs average 5.3 yards per carry.

The Memphis product originally signed with the Argonauts in August 2021, though his first action after reaching the deal was as an emergency COVID relief player with the Ottawa Redblacks. After returning to the Blue Jays, he started four games in each of his first two seasons but was limited by injury.

The six-foot-four, 295-pound blocker signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent in 2019, but was released that month and immediately went to the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where he dressed for one game. In four professional seasons, he appeared in 21 contests, starting all of them.

Tate now joins a franchise that struggled at the tackle position in 2023, starting three different players in left tackle and four in right tackle.

Pending free agents can negotiate with all league teams during the current window, which closes on February 11. Players can agree to contract terms with a specific team through 2024, but those deals are not legally binding and cannot be made. Will be completed or officially confirmed before free agency opens on February 13th.

The Stampeders open their 2024 season on Friday, June 7 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
