Martin Pospisil entered the Calgary Flames with a quick, relentless style.

Now he has cashed in on a two-year contract extension, the 24-year-old winger has vowed not to change a thing.

“It's another motivation for me going forward,” Pospisil told Flames TV after Thursday's morning skate in New Jersey. “It's a great feeling, but it didn't happen. I'm just at the beginning. This is a start. I will give my all every day as before.

“My whole style is work-based, and I try to bring it every day, even if my colleagues sometimes don't like it in practice. But that's who I am. I want to win every game and improve every day.”

Pospisil signed a two-year extension worth $1 million annually on Wednesday.

It's a nice reward for reaching the highest level for a guy who has endured a long list of injuries, including a concussion that was feared to be career-ending.

That's good value for the Flames, who have a top-nine forward at a very reasonable price until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Since being called up from the minors in early November, Pospisil has mostly skated on Calgary's second line alongside Nazem Kadri and Connor Zari.

Entering Thursday against the Devils, he had four goals and 11 points in 34 contests as an NHL rookie. The most telling statistic is his hit total. It is estimated that he has already hit 103.

He has fat in his game. He showed it again on Tuesday when he gave Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand a bloody nose, though it earned him a major fine and a game violation.

“I feel like I deserve an extension,” Flames coach Ryan Huska raved. “When he and Connor came in we were struggling. I think Marty, in particular, has brought a different dynamic to our team with the speed at which he plays the game, as well as the size and physicality he brings to the table.

“That was something we lacked early on, so he found some holes in our lineup. And good for him. He understands how to come to the rink every day to play and he has been a very important person for our team. And when he was not among us, you noticed his absence. It says a lot about who he is and who he was.”

Pospisil is another success story from the Flames' scouting and development staff.

He was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Patience was needed, but the Slovak is now impressing with his speed and agility.

When his two-year extension expires, Pospisil will remain under team control as a restricted free agent.

“It wasn't an easy road to get here, and I'm excited to play two more years for the Flames,” Pospisil told Flames TV in New Jersey. “This organization believed in me even in very difficult times. I didn't play many games and they still believed in me, and I'm very grateful for that. I try to show them in every game that they are not mistaken in that belief.”
