Mason Marchment of the Dallas Stars was fined $5,000 for a tackle on Jake McCabe of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NEW YORK – Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment was fined $5,000 for interfering with Toronto's Jake McCabe after the Maple Leafs quarterback was covered in blood during Wednesday's game.

The play came in the second period of Toronto's 5-4 win, when Marchment caught McCabe with a late shot after the blueliner bounced the puck along the boards.

The Leafs were fuming after the incident, which was not penalized by on-ice officials.

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said McCabe required stitches to the bridge of his nose, but praised the player for his composure.

Money from March's fine — the highest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement — announced Thursday will go into the Players' Emergency Relief Fund.

“I see a vulnerable player that's been targeted,” Keefe said after the game. “I think that's the kind of hitting they don't want to see in the game. The guy is bleeding everywhere, he needs stitches.”
