Maple Leafs Events and Lunar New Year Celebrations

Hockey action continues, a walk to raise funds for Neighbors in Need and the start of the Lunar New Year festivities are some of the events taking place this weekend. There is also a TTC Line 1 closure to keep in mind.

Maple leaf outdoor exercise

While Toronto is having a successful NHL All-Star weekend, Maple Leafs Outdoor Practice will have plenty to keep you in the hockey spirit.

After Thursday's team practice, the three-day event will continue with Activation Alley, featuring a variety of pop-ups throughout the day, along with food, beverage and merchandise stations.

On Friday afternoon, Leafs Alumni t will be at Nathan Phillips Field signing autographs before taking to the ice for the blue and white game on Saturday. The weekend ends with a Leafs vs. Senators game night that includes free skating.

Celebrating the Lunar New Year 2024

Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, celebrates the start of a new year according to the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. It is a festival full of gatherings, grand feasts, colorful decorations, traditional clothes and ancient customs. This year marks the transition of the Zodiac signs from the Year of the Rabbit (2023) to the Year of the Dragon (2024). As part of the 15-day festival, Toronto's Chinatown BIA, Dragon City Mall and Chinatown Center are hosting Lunar New Year celebrations. on Saturdays and Sundays.

City art exhibition

This Sunday is a free indoor art market where you can buy the work of over 85 Toronto artists and artisans. The City Art Show features art, photography, sculpture, home decor and other unique items. There will also be food vendors and a DJ.

Winter Walk for Neighbors in Need

Yonge Street Mission is hosting its first Winter Walk for Neighbors in Need to support street youth, needy families and adults experiencing poverty.

They have raised more than $85,000 toward their $180,000 goal. All proceeds benefit the more than 100 programs and services offered by YSM.

The walk starts at 4pm on Saturday in St Paul's Bloor Street, where participants can take part in a two or five kilometer fundraising walk.

TTC/GO will be closed

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be no service on the Yonge-University Line 1 between St. George and St. Andrew stations due to track work. Due to the construction on the surface routes, there are no shuttle buses. Riders are encouraged to use streetcars or Line 1's Yonge St. Service is expected to resume at 6 a.m. Monday.

Road closures

The city continues to be closed

  • University Avenue will be reduced to one lane between College Street and Queen Street West over the next seven months to complete several infrastructure projects.
  • Southbound Bayview Avenue is closed from Parkhurst Boulevard to East Eglinton Avenue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until February 9.
  • Broadview Avenue between Gerrard Street East and Danforth Avenue will be closed to southbound traffic and will be reduced to one northbound lane until November to replace the TTC streetcar tracks.
  • Teston Road in Vaughan will be closed between Pine Valley Drive and Weston Road until the end of the year for road reconstruction and bridge work.
  • Queen Street is completely closed to traffic between Bay and Victoria Streets for work on the new Ontario Line subway station. The closure is scheduled to last at least four and a half years until 2027.
  • West Lake Shore Boulevard, from Rees Street to Spadina Avenue, will be reduced to two lanes until May 31, 2024 for Enwave construction.
  • Northbound Yonge Street was reduced to one lane between Wellington and King streets for TTC construction. The project is planned to continue until 2024.
  • On Avenue Road, the northbound lanes are closed from Yorkville Avenue to Elgin Avenue due to an emergency valve replacement.
  • Both northbound lanes of Yonge Street from King Street to Wellington Street are closed for TTC construction until September 30, 2024.
  • Both eastbound westbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard from Cherry Street to Carlaw Avenue are closed until April 10, 2024.
  • The westbound and eastbound lanes of West Finch Avenue from Dufferin Street to Wilmington Avenue are closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until March 31, 2024 for truck drainage improvements.
  • The eastbound and westbound lanes of Eglinton Avenue westbound and Royal York Road northbound to the 427 ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until June 1, 2024.
