Fog, freezing rain warnings for Calgary

Fog continues to blanket much of Calgary and southern Alberta on Thursday, causing poor visibility and slippery roads.

The Environment Canada Council on Climate Change (ECCC) was initially issued Tuesday night and is still in effect, accompanied by a freezing rain warning.

The agency said the fog was expected to lift around noon, but could intensify again Thursday night.

According to the ECCC, fog warnings are issued when visibility is near zero or occurs in fog.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some areas and freezing rain will make surfaces such as highways, roads, driveways and parking lots icy and slippery.

According to the ECCC, freezing rain can create thin, hard-to-detect layers of ice.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain that falls in sub-zero temperatures freezes on contact and forms icy surfaces over time.

It is expected to taper off around noon on Thursday.

If visibility is reduced while driving, motorists are advised to slow down, watch tail lights and be prepared to stop.
