Calgary Weather: A foggy start again, with cooler conditions lingering Thursday

Southern and central Alberta will once again sit under a fog warning as dense fog and near-zero visibility affect the region.

A freezing rain warning has also been issued for Calgary and communities north, south, east and west, including Cochrane, Airdrie, Red Deer, Okotoks, Brooks, Drumheller and Medicine Hat.

A freezing rain warning was issued for southern Alberta Thursday morning.

Freezing rain can cause icy conditions because supercooled water droplets falling below 0 C freeze on contact with surfaces and form a layer of ice that can be difficult to detect.

Environment and Climate Change Canada's 4:57 a.m. bulletin noted that the freezing rain is “expected to taper off around noon (Thursday).”

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, highway conditions around Alberta were worse than Wednesday, with many parts of the province's southeast showing icy and snow-covered routes.

Camera 511 Alberta outside Calgary still showed fog at 8:30 a.m.

The Colorado Low over the Dakotas brings snow to southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta. This, along with a ridge of high pressure over northern British Columbia, has created a stagnant pattern in parts of Alberta that lie between the two systems.

As a result, daytime highs in Calgary are expected to remain cool over the next two days, with overnight lows expected to be slightly warmer than average. The weather will not change, there will be fog and ice on Friday morning.
