Ka'Deem Carey will not return to the Calgary Stampeders.

His days playing ball for a Canadian Football League club are over.

Too many injuries affected one of the league's most dynamic players, causing the Stampeders to go in a different direction at the running back position next year.

“I talked to Ka'Deem,” confirmed Stampeders GM/Head Coach Dave Dickenson. “He's going to go to free agency, maybe.

“Ka'Dim was a great Stampeder,” Dickenson continued. “But he had some things that worried us with the injury, so we felt like we were going to make that move and get younger.

“It helps us to have a really good player in Dedrick Mills.”

Indeed, Mills, who was re-signed by the club last month, will now be the focal point of the red and white ground game.

The significant dollar amount attached to the contract he signed makes it so, and also makes it difficult to bring Carey back into the Stampeders stable.

“We decided to invest in Dedrick and bring back Peyton Logan,” Dickenson said. “We have two more linebackers under contract to improve our competition — (LeVante) Bellamy, who worked for Andre Bolduc last year in Saskatchewan, and BJ Emmons.”

“Emmons is a good player that I think can push and do some things. So we've got a few guys back, but Dedrick has gotten to the point where he's proven he can be a starter.”

Mills was the Stamps' leading rusher last season as he racked up 802 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in 14 games, including nine starts. The former NCAA Nebraska Cornhuskers star had a pair of 100-yard performances, and he also contributed 21 catches for 123 yards and three punt returns for 55 yards.

In 20 career games over two seasons with the Red and White, Mills has 209 carries for 1,261 yards and six touchdowns, as well as 34 carries for 228 yards.

As for Carey, his name has been linked to the BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts, though the Lions have already signed free agent running back William Stanback.

No official announcement will be made until Tuesday about the free agent players who have moved on from last year's teams and signed with others.

Carey, who is believed to have signed a nearly $275,000 contract with the Stamps two years ago, has been plagued by injuries in his five years with the Stampeders and has appeared in just nine games in 2023.

The former fourth-round NFL draft pick, however, continued to impress when healthy, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and 476 total rushing yards to go along with 156 receiving yards.

All told, Carey has racked up 2,855 rushing yards and a 5.8-yard average since arriving in Calgary in 2019. He also added 732 receiving yards on 90 receptions.

“So Ka'Dim…” said Dickenson, “if he wants to keep playing, he won't be out of a job for long.”

The entire Stampeders roster from last year remains unsigned by the club and is still set to become a CFL free agent.

Reports say Adeyemi-Bergland has agreed terms with the Montreal Alouettes.

By agreeing to terms with fellow defensive lineman Ricky Walker, who had 37 tackles and five sacks in a full campaign last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Stamps look like veteran Wiggan – the last two winners of the Stamps' Presidents' Ring. seasons – may not return to club.

The Stampeders appear to have secured the services of tight end Trevon Tate, who started 10 games and played a game for the Argonauts in 2023, according to reports Thursday.
