A “sophisticated fraud ring” was created involving snowmobiles

Calgary police have been charged in connection with a “sophisticated fraud ring” after more than six counts of stolen goods were recovered.

A pair of city residents were arrested during a Feb. 1 raid on a rural property in the 3500 block of SE 84th Street, where police seized more than $100,000 in stolen items.

The raid and arrests stem from an investigation into the fraudulent purchase and sale of snowmobiles in multiple provinces.

The fraud ring came to light in January after a dealer reported a suspicious transaction, police said.

“Our stolen property team worked with district investigators to identify the rightful owners of the stolen property and instead uncovered a complex ring of fraudulent identities used by various people in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia,” police said. issue released on Thursday.

“The suspects used fraudulent documents to purchase, deliver and sell snowmobiles and snowmobile trailers.

“The suspects allegedly stole multiple victims' personal information, used the stolen information to create fraudulent identifications, and used credit cards in the victims' names to purchase snowmobiles for resale to unsuspecting buyers online.”

Devin Douglas Bruce, 35, and Isabella Morgan Schenk, 27, are charged.

Bruce was charged with two counts of possession of forged documents; two counts of possession of stolen credit cards; possession of a stolen identification document; and possession of identity information.

Schenck was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance; and storage of stolen identification documents.

Both are scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on March 15.

Investigators from multiple units from multiple agencies in multiple jurisdictions worked together to move the investigation forward, Insp. Keith Hurley said in Thursday's edition.

Hurley added that investigators' efforts “stopped what we believe may be multiple victims of identity theft.”

The investigation into this fraud group is ongoing.
