2 Winnipeggers charged with assault on Mountie

Winnipeg police say two men have been charged with assaulting an off-duty RCMP officer.

According to WPS, on Feb. 6 around 3:10 p.m., officers responded to Buchanan Boulevard near Fairlane Avenue near Buchanan Elementary School after receiving a report of an assault.

When officers arrived, they found the off-duty officer suffering from injuries to his upper body. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Both men were taken into custody without incident.

At the time of the incident, school officials initiated containment and security protocols, and officers who arrived at the school helped control traffic to get students out safely, police said.

Through WPS investigation, they learned that the suspects were in a car when school was dismissed and started causing a disturbance.

At this point, an RCMP officer on duty approached the vehicle, identified himself and asked the men to exit the vehicle. The suspects then threatened the officer and physically assaulted him.

WPS says a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old man have been charged with assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats and disorderly conduct.

A 44-year-old man was also charged with two counts of impaired driving.
