Winnipeg may soon sell gas produced at the Brady landfill

The City of Winnipeg may soon begin selling gas produced on Brady Road.

According to the Department of Water and Wastewater's latest assessment, it plans to transfer the city's gas to a private company, which will then convert it to renewable natural gas. From there, gas was sold on the open market. It is expected to be implemented in about two years.

“It uses what's already there, what the landfill produces, and then cleans it up to send it back into the pipeline,” Kuhn said. Brian Mayes, chairs the Water and Waste Committee.

The department is currently waiting for the provincial government to sign off on amendments to allow the project to move forward. If the permit is granted, construction of the facility could begin soon.

“We are close. “We're close to signing that… We seem to be on pace, and hopefully we'll sign it soon and be up and running by 2026,” Mayes said.

Mayes said the plan could reduce landfill emissions by 40 percent because the gas would be consumed and sold instead of flaring.

A previous report said Winnipeg could earn about $10 million over 20 years with the project.

“What we can do at the city level, I think is a good step forward,” Mayes said.
