Winnipeg Airport will handle 4 million passengers for the first time since 2019

The Winnipeg Airports Authority ended a memorable year in 2023 with a passenger period at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG) not seen since 2019.

A total of 4,094,793 people traveled through YWG in 2023, the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic that the airport welcomed more than four million passengers in a single year.

Crossed the four million mark

Despite the challenges caused by the global pandemic, the airport witnessed a remarkable increase in passenger traffic, culminating in a milestone not seen since 2019.

A total of 4,094,793 people passed through YWG's corridors in 2023, marking a milestone in the airport's post-pandemic recovery.

This milestone not only represents a significant increase from last year, but also a return to pre-pandemic levels, with the airport now boasting 91.3% of pre-Covid passenger numbers.

Reflection on achievements and progress

Nick Hayes, President and CEO, Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA).expressed great pride in the collective achievements of the airport's dedicated team and partners.

“Looking back at our journey over the past 12 months and the achievements our dedicated team members have achieved alongside our esteemed partners, there is much to be proud of,” said Nick Hayes.

“From new destinations to new airlines to more options for travelers, 2023 is truly an exciting year as it makes Manitoba an even better place to call home.”

The festive season and the growth of the cargo sector

The fourth quarter of 2023 saw an increase in passenger traffic, especially during the festive season, with 957,081 people traveling.

In addition, YWG's cargo sector experienced strong activity, with total flight weight increasing by 0.8% compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year.

WAA has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art multi-tenant air cargo logistics facility to meet growing demand for air cargo services and strengthen community infrastructure.

This flagship project, supported by Transport Canada with a significant investment of $49 million, reflects WAA's commitment to supporting economic growth and connectivity.

Resilience and recovery trajectories

Despite the severe challenges caused by the pandemic, WAA's financial performance for the fourth quarter of 2023 showed stability and progress.

Consolidated revenue increased 11.1% to $40.5 million, and net income increased year-over-year to $21.7 million.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

In line with its commitment to foster an inclusive environment, WAA introduced innovative sensory support kits in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Available to travelers free of charge, these kits include items tailored to support neurodivergent individuals, making the airport experience more inclusive for all.

Future developments

The future looks promising for YWG, with exciting developments on the horizon. The announcement of Porter's continued service between Winnipeg and Ottawa in the spring of 2024 reflects the airport's growing reputation as a major transportation hub.
