UWinnipeg student receives McCall MacBain regional award

Liam Reid, McCall McBain Regional Award Winner

University of Winnipeg student Liam Reed received the $5,000 McCall MacBain Regional Award.

This scholarship recognizes active student leaders who have demonstrated exceptional character, community involvement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity. It provides funding for a full-time graduate or professional program at any public university in Canada.

Liam, a political science student, restarted the political science club after the pandemic and serves as its co-president. She volunteers at the Canadian International Council, a non-profit organization, and worked part-time during her undergraduate studies. Previously, while a professional ballet dancer, Liam was a member of the union's negotiating committee. He is pursuing a master's degree in political science and public policy, aiming for a career in public service. In 2023, he was awarded the Sir William Stevenson Scholarship.

“Applying for the McCall MacBain Scholarship was an invaluable experience,” said Liam. “Not only did it give me an opportunity to reflect on my own values ​​and aspirations, but it also introduced me to a group of talented, dedicated and altruistic students. Their stories will inspire me for many years.”

Liam was ranked 95 out of over 700 Canadian applicants this year.

The McCall MacBain Scholarships are the result of a $200 million gift in 2019, then the largest single donation in Canadian history by John and Marcy McCall McBain.

Applications open in June 2024 for intake in September 2025. Up to 100 awards ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 are offered in addition to 30 fully funded scholarships. More information about McCall MacBain scholarships can be found online.
