The Winnipeg Sea Bears have re-signed CEBL MVP Teddy “Buckets” Allen through the 2024 season.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced the signing of the CEBL MVP on Wednesday. Teddy Allen for the 2024 season. Allen had a historic 2023 campaign in which he etched his name into the league's record books as he led the Sea Bears to a conference-best 12-8 regular season record for the first time.

Allen averaged 27.2 points per game, becoming one of only two players to average 25 points per game since the CEBL's inception. Despite being known for his prodigious scoring ability, the league's MVP contributed all over the floor. Allen finished the season among the league's top 10 in nine major statistical categories, including points, assists, defensive rebounds, steals, three-pointers, free throw percentage and minutes. He led all CEBL guards with an average of 7.9 rebounds per game.

Allen's MVP season was highlighted by a 42-point game against former team Scarborough on June 2, 2023. That performance tied the league record for goals scored in a game against the team that will win the 2023 CEBL championship. Less than two weeks later, he hit another CEBL single-game high with nine three-pointers against the defending league champions Brampton Ball Badgers.

“I can't wait to get back to work with my family in Winnipeg, where we started something special last year. “We have the best fans and organization,” Allen said.

“I wouldn't have it any other way.”

Off the court, Allen delivered a message of unity and family that have become cornerstones of the Sea Bears' inaugural season.

“We are very excited to sign Teddy Buckets in Winnipeg. His record-breaking MVP season was a big part of helping build the Seabears' first year. Winnipeg showed its love for Teddy, and now we get to see just how much Teddy loves Winnipeg. I can't wait to see him take it to the next level this summer at the Canada Life Center,” said Mike Taylor, Sea Bears head coach and general manager.

“Teddy has been a leader and MVP for us in his first year as a franchise and I'm excited to see him make his own history in Winnipeg.”

Prior to his time in the CEBL, Allen spent time with the Denver Nuggets of the NBA Summer League and the Wichita Sky Kings of the Basketball League.

He finished his NCAA career with the New Mexico State Aggies averaging 19.6 points per game and was named the prestigious Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He is best known for his 37-point performance in leading the Aggies in an upset of the fifth-ranked UConn Huskies in March 2022. Totaled 18.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals in 119 varsity/college games during his time at New Mexico State, Nebraska, West Virginia and Western Nebraska CC.

Allen currently plays for the Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League, where he was named Player of the Month for December, averaging 23 points per game and leading his team to a 3-1 record.

“Signing Teddy gives us a great starting point to rebuild our roster for the 2024 CEBL season and we love the continuity he provides for our team,” said Taylor.
