MONTREAL, Feb. 07, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Pointe-à-Callier, Montreal Archeology and History Complex, presents The heart and soul of St. Henri, an exhibition celebrating the unique history of this Montreal neighborhood. Explore Saint-Henri through the years and through its landmarks and meet the men and women who have shaped the spirit of the neighborhood. Try it from February 8, 2024!

Did you know that Montreal's prominent industrial district, Saint-Henri, was once the third most densely populated city in Quebec? The exhibit provides a unique and expansive overview of the neighborhood, showcasing its loyal community over the years. Filled with 380 properties on loan from 34 private and institutional lenders, incl St. Henri Historical Societythe exhibition traces the evolution of this unique district over nearly 350 years.

Presented as a journey into the everyday lives of residents through different eras, the exhibition takes visitors from prominent neighborhoods to the private spaces of residents. These are first-hand accounts, photographs, films, objects, models and artworks that bear witness to the constant evolution of this vibrant environment. More than 300 audiovisual and iconographic documents illustrate the exhibition layout.

MEANINGFUL HISTORY IN THE CITY

From the village of artisans Saint Henri de Tanneries, to a thriving industrial and working-class city, to today's changing neighborhood, each era has left its mark in history. There are 18 exhibits at the exhibitionth and 19th century-old objects from nearby archaeological sites testify to the neighborhood's artisanal tanning past, exploring its industrial evolution through the variety of manufactured products that shaped its reputation and architectural landscape. The exhibit examines the neighborhood's transformations and its current projects, from its ongoing evolution to its pride in its past.

DEDICATED AND ACTIVE SOCIETY

The exhibition is also a celebration of the loyal and united community that was at the heart of Saint-Henri. From craft know-how to the social struggles that have left their mark on Quebec, explore the personal lives of the people of Saint-Henri through their activities in culture, religion and sports. If we follow a participatory approach, several objects in the exhibition offer a direct appeal to the residents, impressive testimonies. The exhibit also showcases the many innovative community and artistic initiatives that are rocking the neighborhood today.

Lecture: Afro-descendant history of Saint-Henri
Presented by historian and St. Henri resident Dorothy Williams, Ph.D., this lecture explores the history of black communities in Montreal and, more specifically, the St. Henri neighborhood. This side of Montreal's history is brought to light through the history of the neighborhood, its key sites and important figures of the Black community.
This lecture is presented as part of Black History Month.

Lecture: The Industrial Past of Saint-Henri: Issues of Heritage and Memory
Once a village, then an independent municipality, and now a suburb of Montreal, Saint-Henri has a very long and rich industrial past. This lecture examines the key moments of this industrial history before addressing issues related to the conservation and assessment of its remaining traces. What elements of this heritage should be preserved? What memories should be preserved and highlighted? Joanne Burgess, historian and professor of history at the Université de Quebec, Montreal.
