Public health officials noted a measles outbreak in Montreal

Montreal health officials say a case of measles has been reported in Montreal.

The case was confirmed and reported to the Montreal Public Health Authority on Tuesday.

In a press release Thursday, the department said the victim may have contracted the virus during a trip to Africa.

Although this person may be contagious, they went to school on January 29th, to a doctor's office on January 31st, then to the intensive care unit of two different children's hospitals from January 31st to February 1st, and again on February 2nd. .

Public health officials are tracing the person's contacts and asking doctors to identify possible measles cases immediately — before waiting for positive lab results.

Measles is highly contagious and has a long incubation period. Montreal health officials say other cases of measles may appear between now and February 27.

Its symptoms include fever, cough, and a bumpy, red rash.

The two-dose measles vaccine is more than 95 percent effective in preventing infection, public health officials say.
