Police believe the suspect in the death of a Toronto mother has fled Canada

TORONTO – Police say the man suspected of fatally shooting a 44-year-old Toronto woman is believed to have fled the country.

They say 19-year-old Ahmed Ali is the latest of three suspects police have identified in connection with the broad daylight shooting that killed Carolina Huebner-Makurat.

Det. Sergeant. Henri Marsman, who police say is accused of murder and robbery with a firearm, fled to Somalia shortly after Ali was killed in July 2023.

Police previously arrested Damian Hudson, 32, on charges of second-degree murder and Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim, 20, on charges of first degree murder and robbery.

According to police, Huebner-Makurat was walking in a Leslieville neighborhood on July 7 when an argument broke out between three men believed to be drug dealers and he was hit by a stray bullet.

Marsman said police believe Ibrahim and Ali were working together to attack Hudson, and then Ali and Hudson exchanged gunfire.

Police also charged a 23-year-old woman who worked at a nearby supervised consumption facility with being an accessory after the fact and obstructing justice.

None of the charges were proven in court.
