No one was injured after two vacant homes in downtown Winnipeg caught fire

The intersection of Balmoral Street and Sargent Avenue was closed in all directions on Wednesday evening as firefighters battled the blaze.

A home on the edge of downtown Winnipeg had to be evacuated Wednesday night as firefighters battled flames in two nearby vacant homes.

A release from the city said the fire was reported in the 500 block of Balmoral Street just before 7 p.m. The city's website showed about 20 Winnipeg Fire Paramedic vehicles responded to the alarm.

The intersection of Balmoral Street and Sargent Avenue was closed in all directions while crews worked to extinguish the fire, which completely engulfed one house and eventually spread to another.

The city authorities announced that the fire was brought under control at 19:44. The house, where the fire started, suffered significant damage and was partially destroyed.

Crews evacuated a neighboring house as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is being determined.
