Mysterious lights seen in western Canada, Sask. a spark of debate

Continued reports of mysterious lights in Western Canada still leave people puzzled as to where they came from. The sightings follow reports from pilots in the Regina and Winnipeg areas.

Air traffic controllers recorded what the pilots saw and filled out a protocol. You can listen to the pilots discuss what they saw in the video player at the top of this article.

According to Jerry Brodt, regional vice-president of the Canadian Air Traffic Association, these scenarios are more common than you might think.

“It's not that surprising. This happens more often than people think. I am not the result. I'm what my air traffic controllers see,” Brodt said.

Mysterious lights reported by Regina area pilots are believed to have occurred in Gravelburg, Sask. About a week later, more mysterious lights were seen in northwestern Ontario.

“They were surprised because according to air traffic control, nothing should be in the sky,” said ufologist Chris Rutkowski.

Potash workers near Esterhazy, Sask. He also took pictures and videos of the lights in the sky, but Rutkowski says there's a simple explanation in this case.

“We're pretty sure it's mostly flares from Starlink satellites,” he said.

One of the pilots disputed a similar suggestion, saying what they saw “wasn't necessarily a satellite.”

“It wasn't like the satellites where the Morningstar pilot came back and said twice that it wasn't a satellite,” Brodt said.

Researchers are asking witnesses to come forward to better understand what the strange lights could be.
