Canadian police have charged a Montreal man with threatening to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Wednesday X, earlier in a Twitter post.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with threats and will appear in a Montreal court on Wednesday, the RCMP said in a statement. The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

RCMP said the charge was laid after a brief investigation into the man's “threatening comments” on Jan. 31, but did not provide details.

Trudeau's office said it would not comment on the prime minister's security.
