Josef Martinez joins Montreal FC: “I want to get to Wondo”

Martinez said the experience was a valuable experience for him to learn from the sport's all-time greats.

“I'm happy to have the opportunity to play with the most important player in history,” Martinez said. “I mean, every time I go into the locker room, we're just in awe, because one guy, he's won everything and he's still (hungry) to win.”

Martinez, who had 7g/1a in 27 games for Inter Miami last season, joins Uruguayan forward Matias Coccaro as new forwards in Montreal's revamped attack, along with Bulgarian international midfielder Dominik Yankov for first-year head coach Laurent Courtois. The club scored just 36 goals in 2023 and missed the Audi MLS Cup playoffs (10th in the Eastern Conference).

“I've seen a few videos and I know he's a top guy, he's important to the league,” Martinez said of Coccaro. “I hope we have a good match and then I hope I can try to help because I have less experience, a little bit in the league. This is a group and we have to fight together and I hope we have a good chance.
