A friendly Calgary man who went to help Jonathan Denis get rid of his ex-lover told a lawyer he was a peace officer at a Law Society of Alberta hearing Wednesday.

This information is central to Denise's citation from the Law Society for professional misconduct as a member of the Alberta Bar.

Denis, 48, a former Alberta justice minister, faces two citations, including one for allegedly threatening to sue Casey Karpiuk with the regulator in an effort to gain benefits.

In a cease and desist email sent to Denis Courtney McMullan on November 13, 2021, he noted that a Calgary woman he had been dating for several months before learning that Denis Karpiuk was married had taken a job as a peace officer.

In fact, McMullan was on medical leave from his position at the time and has since taken another position with his employer.

“Such conduct may be outside of your code of conduct as part of your profession,” the attorney wrote of the relationship between McMullan and Karpiuk.

Postmedia did not name Karpiuk in its earlier coverage of the Denis Law Society hearing, as tribunal chair Corrin Peterson noted that she had not yet attended and was given an opportunity to raise any privacy concerns.

But neither Karpiuk nor his wife, Darcy, who testified Wednesday, raised any privacy concerns during their testimony.

The husband and wife, who are still together and have their fourth child from his relationship with McMullan, said they went to Denise after repeatedly contacting another woman on social media.

McMullan said she contacted Darcy Karpiuk on Tuesday after she suspected her husband of being estranged from her and having an extramarital affair.

He said his suspicions were confirmed when his wife told him they were married and living together.

Darcy Karpiuk posted another picture, saying the messages were disturbing and that she contacted the mountains before referring to her sister-in-law, Denise.

Denis is facing an additional complaint

In addition, Law Society counsel Shanna Hunka briefed Denis on several emails related to the second complaint against him.

The citation states that he acted for a minor who was injured in a Cochrane motor vehicle collision in a conflict of interest.

Denise admitted Tuesday that she was embroiled in a lawsuit by filing a lawsuit on behalf of her friend after her friend's father first approached her about acting for her daughter, who was driving in a car accident.

Hunka noted that the mother of the teenage plaintiff declined to sue the father (owned by the Jeep) and daughter who were hit by a CP Rail truck.

He showed a series of emails in which the mother said she did not want to pursue the complaint if her daughter's friend and father were named as defendants.

Denis replied that it was “business as usual” and that their insurer would cover any loss.

The tribunal will receive written submissions from Hunka and Denis' lawyer Alain Hepner ahead of possible oral arguments on April 18.
