Burlington man convicted of sexual assault now 'dangerous felon'

A man jailed more than seven years ago for violently sexually assaulting a woman on the Burlington waterfront is now a dangerous offender.

Halton Regional Police say the victim was “assaulted by a stranger” at Spencer Smith Park – near Burlington Avenue and Lakeshore Street. – September 18, 2016 at around 20:30.

“After the woman fled, she called police, who located and arrested Vezio Cardullo, NFA (of no fixed address), near the park,” police said in a statement Wednesday.

Cardullo, then 42, pleaded guilty on Feb. 12, 2021 to assault causing bodily harm, strangulation and resisting arrest, police said.

“After his conviction, a Dangerous Offender application process began,” police said, adding that the process was “completed” on Jan. 26 and Cardullo was designated a dangerous offender.

“The dangerous offender designation is for Canada's most violent criminals and sexual predators,” police explained. “It is sought by the Crown at sentencing and the offender must demonstrate a high risk of committing violent or sexual offenses in the future.”

The judge sentenced Cardullo to 17 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release.

“The Halton Regional Police Service hopes this result will bring some relief to the victim in this matter,” police said.
