An Air Canada flight that was supposed to make a three-hour flight from Toronto to Vancouver on Monday was instead in the air for nearly seven hours before returning to its starting point.

Flight AC698 departed Toronto at 9:43 p.m. on Monday, according to FlightAware International, an organization that specializes in flight tracking data. It actually happened two minutes earlier than planned. But there was trouble approaching the airport, which, like much of eastern Canada, was in the grip of a major storm.

The data shows that the Boeing 737 Max 8 plunged about 600 meters while preparing to land, before going around a second time and then entering a brief holding pattern.

After the third attempt, the plane took off from the airport and headed back to Toronto, where it landed at 4:20 a.m., more than three hours late, and went nowhere.

As reported by BlogTO, Air Canada said strong headwinds prevented the flight from landing safely. “With severe winter weather affecting other airports in the region and the time of day, returning to Toronto was the best option,” he added.

Eddie Sherr, meteorologist for NTV News in St. John's He expressed his condolences on Twitter for passengers: “For those of you on the flight, my heart goes out to you because I know what it's like. But remember that any choice you make on the flight deck has your safety in mind. He added: “The weather will improve tomorrow and flights should resume.”

Bad weather has caused many air traffic delays, diversions and cancellations. That night, a WestJet flight from Calgary to St. John's made an abrupt right turn north of Quebec to also land in Toronto. This flight was only 40 minutes late and its passengers were a little closer to their destination.
