Huebner-Makurath was walking to get lunch around 12:20 a.m. on July 7, 2023, when a fight broke out in a park near the South Riverdale Community Health Center on Queen St. E. and Karlav Ave.

A 44-year-old woman was shot and killed.

Homicide Sgt. Henri Marsman said at a news conference Wednesday that investigators believe a robbery — for drugs, money or both — prompted the fight that led to the shootout.

Also arrested on Aug. 14 was Khalila Zara Mohammed, 23, of Pickering, who worked with drug addicts in the center's harm reduction program. He is charged with complicity in an indictable crime and obstruction of justice.

“Our theory is that Mr. Ibrahim and Mr. Ali were together and attacked Mr. Hudson,” Marsman said.

He said Ali and Hudson were both armed with guns and opened fire on each other.

Hudson has been charged with second-degree murder, as investigators believe it was a bullet fired from Huebner-Makurat's gun that killed her.

Ali is currently wanted in Canada for murder and robbery with a firearm.

He is known to police, but Marsman did not explain how it happened.

Police released photos of Ali, described as 6 feet tall, about 130 pounds, with a thin build and long black braided hair.

The shooting that killed Huebner-Makurat has raised concerns about safety issues around the South Riverdale Community Health Center — area residents have been ringing alarm bells for years, but no one is listening.

In October, the Ford government relieved SRCHC's board of directors and senior management of their duties following a critical incident review.

The province has also installed a supervisor to oversee all decisions at the center and asked Unity Health, the parent organization of St. Michael's Hospital, to “complete a comprehensive, third-party review” to examine SRCHC's operation and eligibility for consumption. location of treatment services site.

Details of the third-party review have not yet been disclosed.
