A new Filipino restaurant has opened in Montreal, offering traditional cuisine with a modern twist

Montreal… Meet Junjun.

A new Filipino restaurant has opened its doors in Montreal, offering a range of artisanal dishes in an updated form, making Junjun one of the first restaurants in Montreal to offer modernized Filipino cuisine.

Located on Notre Dame Street, Junjun has taken over the prominent spot of Chez Sophie in Griffintown with a new menu, a completely redesigned bar with a cocktail and wine list, and personal touches that can be seen up close.

With a total of 45 seats, Junjun is helmed by Bic, JoJo and Teddy Flores, along with Executive Chefs Neil John Gayo and Lorenzo Aquino, who have perfected updated Filipino cuisine at its most delicious.

Guests can dive into traditional dishes with a modern twist, including duck adobo, usually made with pork or chicken. However, Junjun upped the ante by adding fruit and changing the sauce to make it taste like eating Peking duck.

Chef Aquino has also reinvented the bulalo by thinly slicing the beef and topping it with buttery mayo, grilled corn slaw and sauerkraut.

A few other mouth-watering dishes include Junjun's arroz caldo, which is ginger-infused rice with chicken turned into a mushroom risotto. No trip is complete without trying the beef caldereta with potato foam and coconut butter sauce.

To round out the meal, patrons can indulge in decadent bibinka, brown butter rice cake with coconut caramel, a salted egg-macapuno concoction, and toasted coconut.
