RCMP have charged a 30-year-old Montreal man after threatening to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a social media post.

Paul Clarisso was charged with threatening the Prime Minister after making a statement on his X account (formerly Twitter).

“The RCMP takes seriously any threat to a person's sense of safety. Statements of violence will not be tolerated,” the RCMP said in a statement. “Offenders may face criminal charges that include significant penalties.”

The force said on Jan. 31 that the charges were laid after a brief investigation by the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team.

Clarisso will appear in a Montreal court on Wednesday to face the charges.

The Prime Minister's Office said it does not comment on security issues related to the Prime Minister.
