CALGARY — An officer has been charged with sexual assault more than three years after the province's police watchdog launched an investigation into an alleged crime.

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team launched an investigation into allegations against an on-duty officer in Calgary in October 2020.

He found that there were reasonable grounds to believe that an offense had been committed.

The results were then forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which decided there was enough evidence to prosecute the man.

ASIRT Executive Director Mike Evenson ruled that the officer should be charged with sexual assault.

The officer was released and will appear in court next month.
