Toronto actress Amrit Kaur flaunts her comedic charm in a Doritos Canada Super Bowl ad

As Super Bowl LVIII unfolds in Las Vegas and the wider world prepares to watch Taylor Swift's boyfriend battle it out for the titles, Canadians are looking forward to getting their fair share of Super Bowl commercial airtime.

It wouldn't be a Super Bowl without commercials, it's an open secret that companies shell out a lot of money for a piece of digital real estate, and for a while Canadians only liked American content. But the 2019 Supreme Court decision left us in the dark. However, in 2024, the tables have turned.

Doritos Canada created a quintessentially Canadian ad shot at Scarborough Film Studios and starring two native sons ready to fill commercial breaks with culture-related material and lots of Doritos.

Family Feud Canada host Jerry Dee and The Sex Lives of College Girls star Amrit Kaur are set to grace our screens with their unique humor and unmistakably Canadian characters.

While little has been revealed about the ad itself, it features Kaur and Dee reshooting the US's famous Super Bowl commercials, so check out the teaser below to give Canadians a full game day look.

A month before the big game, Toronto sat down with Kaur for a promotional shoot.

“I like (the commercial), it's very clever. I feel very uncomfortable doing this. Because I feel like I'm bombing. I don't like bombing. But it seems funny to people,” said Kaur.

The 30-year-old actress, writer and producer is best known for her career-defining turn on Mindy Kaling's HBO Max show, in which she plays the occasionally reckless but highly talented student comedy writer Bela Malhotra.

When we met in mid-January, Kaur was sitting on a pile of blankets in his trailer. It was the height of Toronto's nasty, if brief, cold spells and the warmth of her space gave us both a much-needed respite.

“I'm very picky about endorsements,” Kaur began, “but I like the idea of going to America.” I feel more excited, how can I say this?' he paused to choose his words.

“I grew up in a multi-caste system, thinking one thing was better than another. Even in America, I got my first big break there, and then there were Canadian auditions or projects because of that,” he explained.

(But) I am a first class person born and raised here. I love that this Doritos ad is saying that in whatever way it is….I think there's a big concept of humanity around Canadians (and it is) that we're not second class.

In addition to the hit TV show, Kaur is a seasoned writer and member of Gracemoon Arts, a New York-based Canadian collective of actors and artists committed to presenting captivating and original stories.

“We are a group of Canadian artists. I love talking about it because it works for the campaign here. This is about Canadian artists who have worked hard to become great actors. I will go to America and promote Canada to bring us to the international stage as filmmakers as well as theater artists,” explained Kaur with deep enthusiasm.

Next year, Gracemoon Arts will open its program with The Netherlands, which Kaur says is “a dream center for all artists.”

The Doritos commercial will air during the Super Bowl on February 11th.
