Syria says Israeli airstrike kills, injures civilians in Homs – Winnipeg Free Press

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Israeli airstrikes on the central city of Homs and its countryside late Tuesday killed and wounded civilians, the Syrian military said.

There was no immediate comment from Israel.

Syria's state news agency SANA quoted an unnamed military official as saying on Wednesday that the strike damaged both private and state property, without giving further details. Israeli warplanes have reportedly struck the Syrian city and countryside near the Lebanese coastal city of Tripoli across the Mediterranean Sea.

The strikes come as tensions flare in the Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war and a drone strike on Sunday that killed three US soldiers and injured dozens in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.

According to the pro-government radio station Sham FM, the areas hit include the affluent al-Malaab district and Hamra Street. It said Israel struck agricultural fields in al-Waer, causing fires but no casualties.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based pro-opposition war monitor, said at least nine explosions were heard in and around Homs, home to Lebanese Hezbollah fighters who support the Syrian government in the ongoing conflict.
