Police believe the Montreal murders were a criminal case

Montreal police are investigating a hit-and-run that took place Tuesday evening in the parking lot of a busy West Island mall.

The victim, Stevens Cantav, 42, was a member of a Montreal street gang with a criminal record. A police source confirmed that the victim of the shooting outside Galeries des Sources, a section of the mall that is home to many restaurants and a gym, was identified as Cantav.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The homicide is the fifth on the island of Montreal this year. In the corresponding period last year, only one murder was registered.

Kantav was shot several times in the upper body. He may have been inside the car at the time of the shooting, spokeswoman Jeanne Drouin said.

Her attacker or attackers fled in a vehicle before police arrived, and no arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.

A large security perimeter was set up at the scene of the shooting on Wednesday and a command post was set up. At the scene of the incident, experts examined the area and reviewed local CCTV footage.

In 2008, Cantav was part of a Quebec court precedent when he was denied bail in a Montreal court case in which he was charged with possession of two firearms. One was found in his apartment in Longueuil and the other in his friend's apartment in Montreal.

A judge ruled that Cantav's arrest was justified when he was charged with being a twin in how Montreal police found the weapon during a drug-dealing investigation. During the bail hearing, a member of the Montreal police said Cantaw was a member of a street gang based on the west side of the island of Montreal.

Part of the investigation was a shooting inside a bar on March 2, 2008, during which the shooter made two calls to a phone associated with Cantave. As police gathered information about the shooting, a source told them Kantaw slept with a gun under his pillow and carried it wherever he went.

Four months after the shooting, Kantav and the suspect were caught in the same car. Police found the phone from the shooter inside the car.

In 2009, Kantav pleaded guilty to possession of both weapons and was sentenced to 19 months in prison on top of the time he will spend behind bars pending the outcome of his case.

In 2002, a judge hearing evidence in the case at the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) was told that Kantaw was a member of the Crazy Juvenile Bang, which had ties to the Crack Down Posse. Involvement in clashes north of Montreal.

Crack Down Posse member ordered deported.

According to La Presse, Kantaw was in close contact with Markkens Vilme, a member of the Roughriders street gang based in the West Island.

In 2022, Vilme was one of three people convicted in Ontario of the March 11, 2019, murder of the Hells Angel located at the Michael Debaitois-Shul. The victim was shot after leaving a gym on a vacant lot in Mississauga, Ont.
