Musk called the Toronto Star “Canadian Pravda” after Polievre accused the paper of a “ridiculous attack.”

One of the world's richest men has compared the Toronto Star to Soviet state media after Conservative leader Pierre Pouillevre said the newspaper planned to write a “hit” article about him.

In a post on X Tuesday evening, Poilevre accused the Star of a “ridiculous attack” with the upcoming story.

“The Toronto Star is trying to write a hit piece about my wife buying a $300 plunge pool a few years ago that we paid for and built ourselves,” Poilevre wrote. “They are attacking us (the National Capital Commission) for putting up a security fence in Stornoway to protect our children after my family was threatened.”

Elon Musk, X owner and CEO of Tesla responded.

“The Toronto Star has become Canada's Pravda,” he wrote.

Pravda was the official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union until the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Although the Toronto Star is not state-owned, it, along with many other Canadian newspapers, receives significant financial support from the federal government.

Poillevre's wife, Anaida, shared several supportive responses to Poillevre's post on her Instagram page.

“Please explain to me, 300.00 is a bigger deal than inviting a pool Nazi to hang out. Someone? Can anyone help me here? ” One comment on this, referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's invitation to Nazi veteran Yaroslav Hunka to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Toronto.

“I have the exact same pool,” said another comment. “Last summer I spent money on the kids because I can't afford much else with Justin. The fact that you have that same vacation instead of 20k should say a lot.”

Poillievre's post includes a photo of her children in a shopping cart with a small pool on the bottom shelf of the cart. He also shared a picture of the family's backyard with a water-filled pool and a floating pool toy set up at Stornoway, the official residence of Canada's opposition leader.

The Star article referenced by Poilevre was not online as of 7 p.m. Tuesday.
